L. casei is known to transport and ferment type-1 disaccharides of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). L. casei is found in human gastrointestinal tracts, where there is also a high abundance of LacNAc. This study showed that L. casei is also able to metabolize the type-2 disaccharide LacNAc of HMO, demonstrated by the culture of L. casei in the presence of LacNAc. The study also demonstrated the transport of LacNAC by phosphotransferase system (PTSlac).
