Finasteride

An irreversible inhibitor of 5α-reductase with high potency for the 5AR2 isomer (IC50 = 69 nM). The compound inhibits the conversion of testosterone in dihydrotestosterone and has been used for the treatment of prostate cancer, hair loss in men and excessive hair growth in women. Thanks to its anti-androgenic activity it has been used as hormone replacement therapy in transgender women. Moreover, finasteride reduces L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia in rodent models for Parkinson’s disease.
