Amphotericin B - Antibiotic for Culture Media Use Only

Amphotericin B is a potent antifungal agent produced by the bacteria Streptomyces nodosus. By binding Ergosterol, it forms pores in the cell membrane causing cell death. The mechanism of action of Amphotericin B unfortunately is also responsible for its toxicity because it can interact with Cholesterol (the mammalian steroid having analogous function of Ergosterol). This beautiful molecule has certainly stimulated great synthetic chemistry and also interesting biological studies.
