Digitonin - stable clear, water-soluble

Digitonin, stable clear, water soluble (D-3203) is a superior watersoluble Digitonin with improved stability for aqueous solutions.Digitonin is produced from seeds of Digitalis pupurea and otherDigitalis species. It is a steroid glycoside consisting of the aglycondigitogenin linked to five sugar residues. Digitonin reacts hemolyticand is toxic to humans. Digitonin is frequently used for thesolubilization of membrane proteins and for the permeabilization ofcellular and nuclear membranes. Digitonin permeabilizes plasma membranesof eukaryotic cells by complexing with membrane cholesterol and otherunconjugated beta-hydroxysterols. This mechanism is used in proceduresfor the determination of cholesterol and ergosterol using Digiton.About this product: Aqueous solutions of conventional Digitonin willprecipitate upon cooling to 4°C and will lose most of the biochemicalfunction. Therefore, the precipitate is usually removed by filtration inmany protocols. This filtration however decreases the concentration ofDigitonin and alters the solubilizing power of the original product. Inaddition, precipitation and subsequent filtration result in an unknownDigitonin concentration in the final solutions and may negatively affectthe reproducibility of any experiment with such solutions. In contrastto conventional Digitonin, our product Digitonin, stable clear, watersoluble (D-3203) is a special grade that will not precipitate for atleast one week.
